The Birth & Death of the Sun : Stellar Evolution and Subatomic Energy

Description

How did our sun come into being? What keeps it hot and luminous, and what will be its ultimate fate? This fascinating and informative book offers answers to some of nature's most exciting and difficult questions. George Gamow, renowned physicist and author of the best-seller One Two Three . . . Infinity, outlines the fundamental discoveries and theories of modern physics that illuminate the evolution of our world. One of the founders of Big Bang theory, Gamow traces the anatomy of matter in terms of modern physics. In language that's both scientifically accurate and simple enough for nonspecialists, he explains the development of atomic theory from its earliest articulation by Democritus in 375 B.C. through studies of nuclear reactions and radioactive decay. Along the way, Gamow discusses the formation of the stars and planets, the nature of red and white dwarfs, the dimensions of our stellar system, the infinity of space, and other fascinating subjects.

Vulnerabilities abound in U.S. society. The openness and efficiency of our key infrastructures a " transportation, information and telecommunications systems, health systems, the electric power grid, emergency response units, food and water supplies, and others a " make them susceptible to terrorist attacks. Making the Nation Safer discusses technical approaches to mitigating these vulnerabilities. A broad range of topics are covered in this book, including: * Nuclear and radiological threats, such as improvised nuclear devices and a /dirty bombs;a * Bioterrorism, medical research, agricultural systems and public health; * Toxic chemicals and explosive materials; * Information technology, such as communications systems, data management, cyber attacks, and identification and authentication systems; * Energy systems, such as the electrical power grid and oil and natural gas systems; * Transportation systems; * Cities and fixed infrastructures, such as buildings, emergency operations centers, and tunnels; * The response of people to terrorism, such as how quality of life and morale of the population can be a target of terrorists and how people respond to terrorist attacks; and * Linked infrastructures, i.e. the vulnerabilities that result from the interdependencies of key systems; In each of these areas, there are recommendations on how to immediately apply existing knowledge and technology to make the nation safer and on starting research and development programs that could produce innovations that will strengthen key systems and protect us against future threats. The book also discusses issues affecting the governmenta (TM)s ability to carry out the necessary science and engineering programs and the important role of industry, universities, and states, counties, and cities in homeland security efforts. A long term commitment to homeland security is necessary to make the nation safer, and this book lays out a roadmap of how science and engineering can assist in countering terrorism.

Stuart Neilson: Living with Asperger Syndrome and Autism in Ireland

Living with Asperger Syndrome and Autism in Ireland

Description

This book is for people with autism spectrum disorder, from adolescence to adulthood, and for people who wish to understand the experience of living with autism in Ireland. You are probably reading this far because you have been diagnosed with a label on the autism spectrum, suspect that you may have some degree of autism or have an interest because you live with or have a friendship with someone who has, or might have, an autism spectrum disorder. The term 'autistic' in this book refers to all people with autism, whether with Asperger syndrome, high-functioning autism or any other position on the spectrum. The important criterion is that the issues in your daily life relate to the issues discussed here - within the book we use the term as little as possible, just as humans exploring the moon or the ocean depths would not discuss the 'problem' of being human in those environments. Why specifically "in Ireland"? Because this book is about life, not about autism, and we want to refer to the services, bureaucracy, social settings and other influences that create problems in everybody's life. A lot of this is very specific to the country we live in and the organisations that we have to deal with. We also try to gather, in one place, a comprehensive reference to relevant organisations, charities, services and resources related to autism in Ireland. This includes a broad selection of books, websites and other places where you might seek more information, and refer to these where relevant in the main text. We have included our own reviews of fictional accounts of characters on the autism spectrum in film, television and books - you may find some characters you can identify with and others who are plainly nothing like you, and might use them to open up conversations about your experiences with friends or partners, or simply keep them as personal role models. This book fills a niche not currently served in that it provides practical advice for people on the autism spectrum in an Irish context.

Into this story of brutal conquest and flight, of forest hiding-places and pursuit, of resistance with lessening hope, the Dark Lord and the Dragon enter in direly articulate form. Sardonic and mocking, Glaurung Karl-Jesco Von Puttkamer download ebook pdf manipulated the fates of Turin and Nienor by lies of diabolic cunning and guile, and the curse of Morgoth was fulfilled. The earliest versions of this story by J.R.R. Tolkien go back to the end of the First World War and the years that followed; but long afterwards, when The Lord of the Rings was finished, he wrote it anew and greatly enlarged it in complexities of motive and character: it became the dominant story in his later work on Middle-earth. But he could not bring it to a final and finished form. In this book Christopher Tolkien has constructed, after long study of the manuscripts, a coherent narrative without any editorial invention.

Racing Through the Dark: The Fall and Rise of David Millar

Description

By his 18th birthday David Millar was living and racing in France, sleeping in rented rooms, tipped to be the next English-speaking Tour winner. A year later he'd realised the dream and signed a professional contract with the Cofidis team, who had one Lance Armstrong on their books. He perhaps lived the high life a little too enthusiastically -- high on a roof after too much drink, he broke his heel in a fall, and before long the pressure to succeed had tipped over into doping. Here, in a full and frank autobiography, David Millar recounts the story from the inside: he doped because 'cycling's drug culture was like white noise', and because of peer pressure. 'I doped for money and glory in order to guarantee the continuation of my status.' Five years on from his arrest, Millar is clean and reflective, and holds nothing back in this account of his dark years.

The Classical Style: Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven

Description

'Brilliant and epoch-making.' Times Literary Supplement In this remarkable study, now an established classic which has remained in print since its first publication in 1971, Charles Rosen surveys the language of the music of the classical period. He concentrates on the three major figures of the time - Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven - because 'it is in terms of their achievements that the musical vernacular can best be defined'. He follows the development of each composer's best known genres: for Haydn, the symphony and string quartet; for Mozart, the concerto, string quintet and comic opera; for Beethoven, the piano sonata. In addition, the author ranges widely through material which falls outside these categories.

Ken Bruen: The Magdalen Martyrs

The Magdalen Martyrs

Description

Jack Taylor is walking the delicate edge of a sobriety he doesn't trust when his phone rings. He's in debt to a Galway tough named Bill Cassell, what the locals call a "hard man." Bill did Jack a big favor a while back; the trouble is, he never lets a favor go unreturned.Jack is amazed when Cassell simply asks him to track down a woman, now either dead or very old, who long ago helped his mother escape from the notorious Magdalen laundry, where young wayward girls were imprisoned and abused. Jack doesn't like the odds of finding the woman, but counts himself lucky that the task is at least on the right side of the law. Until he spends a few days spinning his wheels and is dragged in front of Cassell for a quick reminder of his priorites. Bill's goons do a little spinning of their own, playing a game of Russian roulette a little too close to the back of Jack's head. It's only blind luck and the mercy of a god he no longer trusts that land Jack back on the street rather than face down in a cellar with a bullet in his skull. He's got one chance to stay alive: find this woman.Unfortunately, he can't escape his own curiosity, and an unnerving hunch quickly turns into a solid fact: just who Jack's looking for, and why, aren't nearly what they seem."The Magdalen Martyrs," the third Galway-set novel by Edgar, Barry, and Macavity finalist and Shamus Award-winner Ken Bruen, is a gripping, dazzling story that takes the Jack Taylor series to explosive new heights of suspense.

The Rosary Handbook: A Guide for Newcomers, Old-Timers, and Those in Between

Description

Why has the rosary remained such a popular Catholic devotional prayer? In this upbeat and easy-to-read book, Catholic author Mitch Finley explains that the simplicity and depth of the rosary make it a prayer for all seasons. The rosary is perfect for those times when words can’t express our feelings, when we want to contemplate the basic truths of our faith, or when we simply want to enter into God’s presence. Finley includes a brief and accurate history of the rosary, explains why it is a Christ-centered prayer, and provides background on the individual prayers of the rosary and a short commentary on each of the twenty mysteries. This book will help Catholics who have prayed the rosary all their lives but want to know more about it—as well as those who want to begin anew or try it for the first time.
